Qashqai 1.5L

We’ve had a query from a 2019 Nissan Qashqai 1.5 L owner, asking if they can tow a trailer with qty 40 x 20Kg bags of coal and what trailer we would recommend for it.

Towing Capacity

From the vehicle’s plate (located on the car’s door pillar ) we can see that the towing capacity is 1450 Kg ( 3405Kg – 1955 Kg ).

This car’s MAM (maximum authorised Mass ) is 3405Kg , so whether you have a B or BE licence, the maximum allowed mass ( total weight of everything including car , passengers, luggage , trailer and its load ) cannot exceed the car’s 3405 Kg designed combined vehicle weight. (DCVW)

Suitable Trailers

Below, we take a look at 3 trailers from the Saris range that might suit this application.

  • A single axle aluminium sided 1350Kg trailer
  • A double axle aluminium sided 2000Kg trailer
  • A single axle platform (drop sided ) 1500 Kg Trailer

Single Axle Saris Mc Alu Pro DV135

This is a single axle 8’4″ x 4′ 4″ 1350 Kg DGVW (Design Gross vehicle weight ) trailer, so as it is under the car’s towing capacity, it could be towed fully laden . Its own weight is 235 Kg and its carrying capacity is 1115 Kg , (1350 – 235 ) so it would be a contender. This can be towed with a B licence. (under MAM of 3500 Kg and within car’s MAM of 3405 Kg)

Double Axle 2000Kg Saris Mc Alu Pro DV 2000

This is a double axle 8’4″ x 4′ 4″ 2000 Kg DGVW (Design Gross Vehicle weight ) trailer, so as it is over the car’s towing capacity, it could not be legally towed , as supplied normally. (It cannot be legally towed, even when empty as its DGVW is greater than the vehicles towing capacity of 1450 Kg ). However we can “downgrade” its Design Gross Vehicle Weight , re-plate with a new VIN and issue a new corresponding certificate of conformity for the trailer so that you can legally tow it with either a B or BE Licence.

For a B or BE licence, we can re-plate with a new VIN , with a DGVW of 1450 KG, so that it can then be legally towed . Its own weight is 340Kg so it could carry a load of 1110 Kg (1450 Kg – 340 Kg )

Single Axle Platform PL 276 150 1500 1

This is a single axle 9′” x 5′ 1500 Kg DGVW Platform trailer, so as it is over the car’s towing capacity, it could not be towed legally, as supplied normally.

Its own weight is 326 Kg so it could carry a load of 1124 Kg (1450 Kg – 326 Kg )

The big advantage of this platform trailer is that the sides can be easily dropped down or removed , allowing easy access for loading and unloading with a forklift. With this trailer you can collect a full 1 ton pallet of coal, without having to lift a bag. Definitely worth considering !

The most important point to understand when considering what trailer you can tow is that it is the trailer’s Design Gross Vehicle Weight (DGVW)…..the weight stamped on the trailer’s VIN plate that you must consider – not the trailer’s un-laden weight. So while your vehicle and your licence could allow you tow 1300Kg , you still cannot tow an empty trailer of DGVW 3500 KG , whose own weight is only 700Kg.
